Good news for foreign tourists coming to Macedonia. If you get lost in the country, most students will be able to help you ... in English.

As part of the national exam for high school students, 360 seniors in one of Skopje's top high schools 'Josip Broz Tito' took part of exams that included: Macedonian, English and Math.

The results stunned not just the students, but the high school and the Ministry of Education who organized the examination.

Out of 360 students, only 8 managed to score an A, while in the Subject of Foreign Langugages (English), out of 240 students 73 received an A.

These results schoked the high schoolers, with the vast majority complained that something went wrong with the grading.

"I saw on the website that I have received a 'C' in my mother tongue (Macedonian), there is just no way this can be true. The questions were not that difficult, something is just not right" says one student.

The schocking results came in Math, where out of 100 students who took the exam only two scored an A, while 55 received D's.

If students were surprised by the grades received in their mother tongue exam, there were no surprises when they reviewed their Math scores.

"The Math exam was extremely difficult, I felt I was at some sort of Math championship" says one student.

Despite the results, Macedonian University professors say the numbers don't necessarily shed a negative light on the students.

"Our students are not stupid, far from it, the English language exam was not easy at all, lots of grammar and difficult questions, but they did amazingly. The reason is because when English is thought, there is lots of emphasis on the grammar. While the Macedonian exam focuses very much on grammar, we focus on literature, hence the results." says Ljudmil Spasov, UKiM Professor at the Faculty of Philology.

No one commented on the Math exams, which have always been notoriously difficult to pass. Each student is allowed to challenge their grade, but at a cost of 1,000 denars. Student must take these exams to have a chance of being accepted at a University.
